Is copying a design style/techniques wrong + illegal?

No its not illegal. Unless they have copyrighted it which I doubt lol. There are too many people in the world and we have been around for far too long for anything to be original anymore. They probably took the idea from somebody else. Like you said you are doing your own coding and using your own images etc as long as your not using the actual content etc from their site I think your fine
