What exactly are Nerf bars for?

I recently bought a GMC Sierra, and I am considering having Nerf bars installed, mostly because it is hard for my freinds and family to hoist themselves into the truck! Are the nerf bars just for convenience, or are they also for protecting the bottom of the truck when you go off roading, as I have been told?
