What to say to a girl while talking?

Today my friend and I randomly approached some girls at a track meet. We sat down, introduced ourselves, asked them what school they were from and what events they were doing. After that it was pretty awkward though and the conversation was sparse with plenty of awkward silences in between. Any help on what else to talk about would be great.
